Rockhound State Park NM

There is a small State Park in New Mexico near Demming where we stopped on our way to Texas. It was 10 miles off of Interstate 10 but we also stopped there on the way home. Rockhound State Park NM, in the scenic Little Florida Mountains of southwestern New Mexico, is a haven for rock enthusiasts. It is also a place for nature lovers. It has hiking trails and rock collecting areas where you can find quartz crystals, geodes, agates, jasper, and thundereggs. Stunning Rockhound State Park photos are easy to capture here.

The Visitors Center

The center was small and had a crew of 2 volunteers. It had photos and articles about the area and the park. It also had many examples of the gems and minerals that are found in the park. We are not rockhounds and selected this park based on its location and price but were amazed at the gems and rocks in the area. I didn’t know what a thunderegg was until I saw one in the Visitors Center. I think I may have found one on a short hike but won’t know until I cut it open.

The Campground

The Campground was very reasonable at $15.00 per night and all of the sites were very spacious and had covered picnic tables

There were 29 sites, 23 with electricity and water, and 6 dry sites. We stayed in #20 on the way there and it was very roomy. On the way back we stayed in # 12 which was a back-in site but we liked it better because it was on the outside of the loop and backed up to the desert with a very good view.

The Trails

The Jasper Trail is .5 miles long and goes from the Visitors Center to the campground and when you combine it with the Thunder Egg Trail you get a 2-mile, moderate hike. It was on the Thunderegg Trail where I picked up a couple of perspective eggs.

The Views

The views at Rockhound State Park NM are stunning. Everywhere you look there are different succulents, from green and purple prickly pear cacti, candy barrel cacti, and hedgehog cacti. There is also a variety of yucca including the impressive silver spoon. Rockhound State Park photos are stunning.
